FAB Music originated in 2005 when Felicity Bayliss (née Baker) first began teaching music lessons. The FAB part comes from her name's initials, and hope that for all who come through her studio to have a fabulous experience and be fab musicians and performers themselves! Of course, having a fab time full of fun too!
Based in the Wellington, New Zealand, suburb of Tawa, Felicity primarily teaches cello and piano, and little one music classes. Her studio has grown in diversity with different disciplines of music including cello, piano, recorder, flute, music theory, as well as early childhood preschool music classes for the very young.
A mother of two little girls, Felicity has a close connection to each child she teaches and believes that every child deserves a chance to explore their own musical voice.
Mini Musos follow the Suzuki Early Childhood Education Programme founded by Dorothy Jones of Canada, which came in to being after her close work with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki of Japan. This class is for the babies and toddlers, because "We are born with a natural ability to learn" and "There is no telling to what heights children can attain if we educate them properly right after birth." (Dr. Suzuki - Nurtured By Love).
Bigger Musos, for the older preschooler, was birthed out of Felicity's realisation of the need for a pre-instrumental programme - before young children start formal music lessons. She developed this programme which builds on the songs and skills learnt at Mini Musos. It is the perfect bridging course for graduating Mini Musos!
We also run Suzuki Music Lessons - which are a wonderful and amazing way to learn an instrument. Dr. Suzuki's Method is based upon the Mother Tongue Approach - so as we learn language, so we learn music because "Every child has the potential to develop amazing ability." (Dr. Suzuki - Nurtured By Love).
Dr. Suzuki's fundamental belief is that all children possess natural ability (talent), that grows according to the degree to which it is nurtured (through education). In Talent Education, ability is fostered by parents and teachers working together with children.
As Dr. Suzuki said, "Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart." At FAB Music we believe (and know!) the Suzuki Method can produce astounding results, and it is our favourite way to learn and educate! We also like to say that when taking lessons or classes, you learn more than just music!
Felicity is a registered teacher of Suzuki Cello and Piano. She teaches children as young as three years of age. Her sister teaches her own method of Harp (similar to Suzuki), brother teaches Suzuki Violin and mother Suzuki Piano too.
